Pastor Tyler Johnson:

Pastor Tyler grew up in a small town in Kansas, the son of a Covenant pastor. During high school his father became a church planter and much of that church-planting DNA was infused into Tyler in a love for the mission of the church and a heart for the unchurched and the de-churched. From his upbringing Tyler developed a deep love for the church, but never intended to go into ministry. Instead he pursued a career in the sciences, earning degrees in physics (Fort Hays State University) and mechanical engineering (Kansas State University).

A bit to his surprise, Tyler thrived in seminary, despite the distinct lack of math or equations (which he still misses on occasion). Tyler graduated with his Master of Divinity in 2013. The next year he accepted a call to serve as the solo pastor of Albert City Covenant Church. He was ordained to Word and Sacrament in 2016.

Pastor Erin Johnson:

Pastor Erin grew up in Nebraska, the daughter of a teacher and a mechanic. She attended church with her family on occasion but wasn’t really involved until high school, when she found a youth group and church home. The summer before her senior year of high school, she finally figured out what this Jesus thing was all about and was baptized in a pool on a youth trip. She took a leadership class as a gen. ed. class in college and fell in love with the field. She also took a chemistry class and met Tyler and fell in love with him. She rushed through the rest of her schooling so she could marry Tyler.

Erin first felt a call to ministry in college when she was able to help lead a campus ministry at her small college. Unfortunately, she was raised in a church that did not affirm women in ministry, so she wasn’t really sure what to do with that call. She married into the Covenant and started learning about the ECC’s biblical affirmation of women in ministry. In 2015, she was able to take some classes at North Park Theological Seminary on Congregational Vitality which combined leadership (which she loves!) and ministry, and her call resurfaced. After some opportunities and affirmations in their current church, Erin decided to pursue ministry in earnest. She is now working towards her MDiv through the seminary’s distance learning program.

Former Interim Pastor Debra Gustafson:

Pastor Debra grew up in the Pacific Northwest corner of Washington State. She received her Master of Divinity from North Park Theological Seminary (1987) and her Doctorate of Ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (2008).  Deb has pastored an urban Covenant Church in Chicago, IL; Church Planted in St Louis, MO, developed missional leaders among University students and most recently she has served as Interim Pastor for three Covenant Churches.  Here is what Deb says about herself: “I enjoy meeting new people and engaging with different cultures and generations.  Some of my favorite things include hiking, Swedish rye-bread, peace, long talks with friends, fall colors, vacations in warm climates, discipling others and discussing passages of the Bible with anyone.  Maybe most valuable to me is that Jesus loves me and I love Him. I am learning to listen to Him and follow Him as an individual and among Christian community.”
